Something to Think About Before Dropping Your Pet at a Shelter

The below is a letter from an Animal Shelter Director. I did not write this. Rather, it is a first hand account of what happens when thoughtless and irresponsible "parents" decide they can't take care of their pets anymore. This is what happens when they give up the responsibility to take care of a life that they volunteered for. Had they not volunteered, maybe someone who actually wanted that pet could have taken them. Maybe the below wouldn't happen so often. This is what really happens in shelters, so think twice before leaving Fido, who is no longer the cuddly puppy you got, there.

**The below is not intended to insult animal shelters in anyway. Quite the contrary, actually. I respect all the work that you put forth to save as many animals as you can. Thank you for all you do.

You can’t keep your pet? Really?
~By a Shelter Director
Our society needs a huge “Wake-up” call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all…a “view from the inside” – if you will.
First off, any of you whom have surrendered a pet to a shelter or humane society should be made to work in the “back” of an animal shelter – for just ONE DAY.
Maybe if you saw the life drain from those sad, lost, confused eyes, you’d stop flagging the ads on here and help these animals find homes. That puppy you just dropped off will most-likely end up in my shelter when it’s no longer a cute little puppy anymore. Just so you know, there’s a 90% chance that your dog will never walk out back out, once entered in to the shelter system…Purebred or not! About 25% of all of the dogs that are “owner surrenders” or “strays” that come into a shelter are purebred dogs.
The most common excuses: “We’re moving and can’t take our dog (or cat).” Really? Where are you moving to that doesn’t allow pets? Or they say, “The dog got bigger than we thought it would”. How big did you think a German shepherd would get?
“We don’t have time for her”. Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs!
“She’s tearing up our yard”. How about making her a part of your family?
“We just don’t want to have to stress about finding a place for her; we know she’ll get adopted, she’s a good dog”.  Odds are, your pet won’t get adopted; how stressful do you think it is for your pet?
Did you know…
  • Your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off? Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and you dog/cat manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles it's euthanized.
  • Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with other barking and crying animals.
  • It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps.
  • It will be depressed and will cry constantly for you.
  • If your pet is lucky, there will be enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk.
  • If not, your pet won’t get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of it’s pen with a high-powered hose.
  • If your dog is big, black or any of the “Bully” breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door.
  • If your cat is scared and doesn’t act friendly enough, or if it catches a cold (which most of them ‘do’), it will be put to sleep. Those dogs & cats just don’t get adopted. In most cases, it doesn’t matter how ‘sweet’ or ‘well behaved’ they are. If your pet doesn’t get adopted within it’s 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn’t full and your pet is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long.
  • Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment.
  • If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because the shelter gets paid a fee to euthanize each animal and making money is better than spending money to take this animal to the vet.

Here’s a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being “put-down”:
First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk…happy, wagging their tails…until they get to “The Room”, every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when they get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there. It’s strange, but it happens with every one of them.
Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 shelter workers, depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a shelter worker who we call a “euthanasia tech (not a vet)”
finds a vein in the front leg and injects a lethal dose of the “pink stuff”.
Hopefully your pet doesn’t panic from being restrained and jerks. I’ve seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood…the yelps and screams are deafening.
They all don’t just “go to sleep”, sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves.
You see, shelters are trying to make money to pay employee paychecks and then, there’s the board of directors…who need to be paid too!
Consequently, corners are cut, and we don’t spend our funds to
tranquilize the animal before injecting them with the lethal drug, we just put the burning lethal drug in their vein and let them suffer until dead.
If it were not a business for profit, we’d do it humanely and hire a licensed vet do this procedure. That way, the animal would be sedated or tranquilized and THEN euthanized.
But to do this procedure correctly would only cost more money…
so we don’t necessarily do what is right for the animal, we do what’s expedient so we can continue to make a buck!
Shelters do not have to have a vet perform their euthanasia procedures. Oftentimes, they are untrained personnel administering lethal injections. So… that employee may take 50 pokes with a needle and 3 hours to get inside the vein.

In the end, your pet’s corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer, usually in the back of the building with all of the other animals that were killed. There they will sit until being picked up like garbage.
What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? Or used for schools to dissect and experiment on?
You’ll never know and it probably won’t even cross your mind. After all, it was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right?!
I hope that those of you who still have a beating heart and have read this are bawling your eyes out and can’t get the pictures out of your head. I deal with this everyday. I hate my job, I hate that it exists and I hate that it will always be there unless you people make changes and start educating yourselves, your children, the public. Do the research, do your homework, and know exactly what you are getting into before getting a pet. These shelters and humane societies exist because people just do not care about animals anymore. And PLEASE stop breeding!
Animals were not intended to be disposable but somehow that is what they’ve become.

Consider this article when you decide to take on the responsibility of a pet. You can't throw them back like a fish you caught. They are part of your family. It's life depends on you. Act like it.

Christmas in South Carolina

We do things just a little bit different in the south.

This year was only the second time I hadn't been back home in PA for Christmas. The first time was in 2009, when I had only been at my job for a few months and couldn't take the time off for both Christmas and Thanksgiving. Each year we can only make the 800 mile trip for one or the other, certainly not both when they are so close together. So it was a quiet Stewart Christmas- just Doug and I with Karma, Pepper and Senior Gato.

...and Melissa Facey (she's peeking out at the bottom of the photo).

You may think I'm a complete lunatic for having a life-size picture of my sister's face but I assure you I am totally normal (mostly). See, there's a hilarious radio morning show that we're big fans of called Preston and Steve on 93.3 WMMR in Philadelphia. One of the co-hosts, Casey, created Casey Facey. Listeners can go on the website and print out a picture of his face, then attach it to a paint stick and take pictures with it in exotic places: France, The Grand Canyon, Chickie n Pete's... The point is that, um, I guess there really isn't a point other than embarrassing yourself in public and making a regional inside joke reach far and wide. When I moved to SC I really missed my sister. We thought that creating facies for one another would be a hilarious way to include the other in things that we do. My first Melissa facey was quite busy.

In my kitchen
I lost her on a road trip to Atlanta. So on Saturday while dreadfully slow at work I made a new one, this time without the ridiculous facial expression.

Melissa Facey with Rowyn on Christmas Eve

Despite how slow we were at work on Saturday I still had a fairly productive day. I started it off by running 8.2 miles with some friends. It was supposed to be a 12 mile run originally, but somebody couldn't hang...*cough cough*. Seriously though, I was not upset about cutting the run short because I needed to fix breakfast and get to work.

AND get a Grande Skinny Peppermint Soy Latte. What? We meet in a Starbucks parking lot to run. What do you expect?? I also got a White Chocolate Mocha for Doug. It's his fave!

I was able to finish off my homemade gift for Doug and was happy to send my employees home 2 hours early! I wrapped up the work day on my laptop while watching the Eagles win but still not make it to the playoffs thank to the Jets. Argh! We had dinner with the neighbors, played the PlayStation Move and then I graciously pulled an Irish goodbye and snuck off to bed with company still over. I was exhausted!

But let’s get back to business: CHRISTMAS! Doug and I had so much fun opening our gifts. We only exchanged a few small items between the 2 of us, but our families had kept the base of our tree full by mailing gifts for weeks.

My Gift for Doug. I got this idea from another blogger and absolutely LOVE it!

I got LOTS of new running stuff, including a headband with headphones built in! SO COOL!

The aftermath

My new scarf, earrings and cookie monster pants
Notice I'm wearing a short sleeve shirt while on my back porch? That's a South Carolina Christmas for you! I couldn't even wear my cookie monster pants for very long because they were way to warm! Seriously. After about an hour I had to strip them off! The weather has been pretty unpredictable recently, with a week of warm and sunny and then 2 fays of bitter cold. I'm sure I’ll get good use out of my winter clothes eventually.

Christmas Breakfast

I really wanted to try a healthy gingerbread pancake recipe but the idea immediately got dismissed by Doug. It turns out he's not a fan of gingerbread :( So instead I made Tone It Up Chocolate Protein Pancakes. They were awesome. Naturally they didn't taste like a gigantic cookie like regular chocolate chip pancakes do, but they were nutrient dense, very filling and super healthy! I had a second pancake for a snack a few hours later. I also indulged with Bailey's in my coffee. Mmmmmm!

With Whipped Chocolate Fat Free Greek Yogurt
All in all I'd say our morning was fabulous! After thoroughly destroying the living room with cardboard boxes and wrapping paper we watched a movie (Warrior- definitely recommended) and spoke to family members on the phone. Before we knew it the time had come to get get ready and head over to the Arlett's (2 of our close friends with 2 amazingly adorable children) for dinner and cocktails!

We had a great time with some of our dearest friends. Dinner was wonderful (thank you to Neil and Tracy) and I especially liked the champagne cocktail we enjoyed at the end of the night. Despite being so far away from home on the holiday we had an incredible time. It made me realize that I have family everywhere- even in SC. I hope anyone reading this also had lots of laughter and love yesterday. Merry Christmas (Fa rararaaa rara ra ra)

Finding Time for 'Me' Time

The holidays are a magical time of year. People are focusing on giving, showing their loved-ones that they care, and spreading joy that they most likely neglected the other 11 months of the year. It's also a time for stress, bad eating habits, missed workouts and anxiety. I'm making it a point this holiday season to take care of myself!

And how do I plan to do that? It's simple to explain (less simple to do):

1) Don't focus on food!
This is a little tip I got from my Tone It Up Girls Karena and Katrina. They made a great point in saying that so many holiday functions are centered around the food. Instead we should sit back, relax and enjoy our friends, loved ones, time to ourselves...whatever makes you happy!
2) Keep working out
Sure, our days are shorter and I more than anyone know it's hard to get up in the morning to sneak in a workout. But regardless how much it sucks to sit up and put our feet on the floor it's important to remember it will not be regretted. A quick morning routine will not only start my metabolism but also wake me up and get me ready for the day spiritually and mentally. Later in the day when I have more time, whether on my lunch break or after work, I'll complete a more thorough routine.
3) Enjoy Holiday Treats in Moderation
I'm not turning my back on homemade treats that are only available this time of year. But I will make sure I'm not over doing it.
4) Focus on giving thoughtful and personalized gifts. It's not about how much you spend but that you know someone well enough to be able to get something they'll enjoy. It's about thoughtfulness.
5) Enjoy Time with My Husband
At parties I'm going to make it a point to socialize with him as well as other people. He's very important and deserves my attention. I'm also going to make sure that we don't miss out on our regular movie nights on the sofa or wine on the back patio. Our time together is invaluable.
6)Find Time for 'Me' Time
My "me" time is a quiet run, time alone in the gym, singing/dancing in the bathroom while getting ready, playing with my pets, or reading a book.

This last item brings me to the real reason for this post. I've discovered recently that one of my favorite things to do alone is read, provided I have the right book. I even joined a book club to ensure that I'm reading like I said I would! Our book club meets once a month, over hors d'oeuvres and cocktails, to discuss our recent read. This month we read The Beach Trees by Karen White.

I really enjoyed it and could appreciate the protagonist's transition from her detached life in the Northeast to a slower life down South. The book also shed light on the deeply emotional act of rebuilding after Katrina and the strength and hope people in Louisiana and Mississippi have. I think a trip to Biloxi (one of the settings) may be in order.

Before reading The Beach Trees my book club read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I wasn't yet part of the group but everyone insisted I would love it so I gave it a shot. Let me tell you they were right! I couldn't put it down and finished it in just 4 days (which is super fast for me)! After reading the first book I quickly moved onto the second (Catching Fire) and am now reading the third (Mockinjay). I think once I'm done with the trilogy I'll write a proper review.

Reading allows me to unwind and detach myself from everyday stresses. With the right book I become completely immersed in the storyline. I'm glad I finally learned that this is a healthy form of relaxation for me. At the risk of being a complete poser, my New Years Resolution for 2012 will be to read at least 1 book a month. This was one of my best friend's resolutions last year and she actually stuck to it!

I'm focusing on me- not in a self absorbed, the world revolves around me kind of way- and it feels good. What are you going to focus on this Holiday Season?

Healthy Meals with a Side of Chritmas Cookies

After waking up 20 minutes late and missing my run with my running group (sorry guys), I still needed to do something to get my metabolism going first thing in the morning.

50 High Knees
20 Reach/Calf Raise to a Toe Touch Stretch

I repeated these simple exercises 4 times through as quickly as possible. My heart was pumping when I was done, which was exactly my goal. I then did about 15 minutes of yoga while I was waiting for Doug to quit hogging the shower.

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, the sweets are flowing here in the office! I planned ahead with some nutrient dense meals to try and curb my cravings for the sweat treats. I started my morning with my Tone It Up Meta-D shake and the Tone It Up Slim Down Scramble. All the Tone it Up recipes are available in their nutrition plan which is incredible and I highly recommend purchasing!

I took some Tazo Green Tea in my travel mug and headed to work. I honestly had every intention of having half a grapefruit for my mid-morning snack but instead indulged in a few Christmas cookies. I'm not gonna lie...I have no will power when it comes to cookies.

Lunch today will be left over Chicken Chili. This is my own recipe and it's really quite simple. I load my chili up with veggies! Ingredients are orange and yellow bell peppers, black beans, red chili beans, zucchini, onion, ground chicken, chili powder and cayenne pepper. This dish is packed with protein and fiber! I didn't take a pic of the chili however I do have a pic of my lunch from yesterday.

This is a tossed salad with mixed greens, baby spinach, red onion, yellow peppers, mushrooms, avocado and coconut curry tempeh. No need for dressing with all those flavors!!

Tonight's workout with be very much needed after all of my indulging! I'll probably do a 1 Body Rock workout, 1 Tone It Up workout and 30-45 min of cardio.

Spreading Christmas Cheer...and Sugar!

After spending a lazy Sunday around the house with Doug, watching football and digging through old photographs, I decided to try making something new! Ever since I picked up a pack of peppermint bark from Walmart last month I've been dieing to make the homemade version. The recipe was easy to follow and required very few ingredients.

Peppermint Bark

Ingredients:

•1 pound dark or semi-sweet chocolate (I used Baker's b/c it's good quality and was on sale at Publix!)

•1 pound white chocolate (again, Baker's)

•1 to 2 teaspoons peppermint extract

•1 teaspoon oil (canola or vegetable)

•4 to 5 regular-size candy canes, crushed

Directions:

1.Line a baking sheet (with raised edges) with foil, and spray with non-stick spray.

2.Melt dark chocolate in microwave (30 second intervals on high, stirring in between).

3.Add 1/2 tsp. of oil and spread evenly in pan. Refrigerate until solid (5 minutes was plenty)

4.Melt white chocolate using the same method, and add 1/2 tsp. of oil, as well as the peppermint extract.

5.After allowing the white chocolate to cool for about a minute, spread white chocolate mixture over dark chocolate layer
6.Sprinkle crushed candy cane pieces on top, and refrigerate (or freeze) until solid.

7.Remove from cookie sheet, peel off foil layer, and chop into pieces.

To be perfectly honest the hardest part of this recipe was chopping the bark up. I so wanted neat little squares (yes I am a perfectionist!) but instead ended up with various shapes and sizes. I placed the bark pieces in little baggies to hand out to my 10 wonderful staff members. I also brought in left over cookies from Saturday night and a box of candy canes. YUM!!

I packed all the goodies into a festive Christmas bag for easy transport. Just walking around with the bag of treats made me feel extra cheerful!

I hope my team enjoyed the treats as much as I liked giving them out. Who knows, maybe the sugar and peppermint will make them extra productive! LOL.

But I wasn't the only one in the auto mall with Christmas spirit! Nick, our General Manager at our Infiniti store, brought us 3 gigantic trays of cookies!

Sugar, Chocolate Chip and Oatmeal Cinnamon (I prefer the Oatmeal Cinnamon)

Talk about a sugar high! Thankfully I balanced it out with a healthy breakfast and lunch. And just when I thought I had seen enough treats for the day Whit, GM at our Nissan dealership, brings me his wife's homemade peppermint bark! I was so happy because I didn't save any of my bark for myself. She make hers with just white chocolate and mixes the candy cane pieces in. It's absolutely delicious! He also gave me 3 bottles of red wine. Chocolate and wine...I wonder if he's buttering me up for something (JK). It was so very generous and I can't wait to uncork a bottle this weekend!

I'm off to the gym to burn off all the Christmas spirit I consumed today ;)
